This is the Crested Pigeon - Ocyphaps lophotes - often mistakenly called the Topknot pigeon. You probably heard it make a distinctive 'whirring' sound as it flew away.
Thanks, Rob. Yes, I did notice their sound, as I recall. Birds, more than anything else, tell the American visitor to Australia that she is in a foreign place. So many are so different and to me look Dr. Suessian or inventions of someone else's imagination.
